Now We Cooking...

Postby Russman » Sat Feb 11, 2017 1:35 pm

Some trial and error, closed barrel took too much effort to heat. Woke up this am and did what I was trying to avoid, opened my barrel, cut in hotel pans to fit perfectly. So should avoid smoky syrup. This system had a boil in 15 minutes.
I'm getting ready for pancakes at this point.
Plus it's Suzie approved

Yes raw sap, got 12 gallons yesterday, thought today would be slow but trees had a run and got 14 gallons and a few trees had gallon jugs overflowing.
Also getting blackwalnut around 4 gallons a day, which I will begin boiling that this weekend

On the home stretch for 1st round of blackwalnut syrup, this is what's left of 35 gallons of raw sap. About 3/4 of a gallon, and still only boiling at 213 degrees, 6 more to go before officially syrup.
With only luck will have in ballpark of 1/2 gallon probably less, of finished product.
Still boiling maple like crazy boiled 40 gallons yesterday down to 4 and burning right now.

Just to bring this into perspective, this started out as 40 gallons of raw blackwalnut sap.
