Jersey bear 2016 "my take "

Postby Russman » Sat Oct 15, 2016 8:25 pm

Went into this season with all the hopes and dreams of a child on Christmas, flashfoward to opening day all I had was juveniles on cam and that was time to time at best. Had the opportunity to work holiday at 2.5 time the rate so went in. Hunted hard Tuesday and had the opportunity to kill a bear at 27 yards, however it wound up being a sow at about 200lbs with 4 cubs the biggest one being maybe 45lbs. Needless to say she got a pass spent the rest of the day in a spot in thought was golden having shots at bucks, does and turkeys. Went back Wednesday to find total opposite few deer in morning no bears. Afternoon got even better with it can only assume an anti walking through woods who walked up on me and said with a smile "I guess I messed up your day" then continued power walking through the woods. Thursday Friday I worked, so season a bust ABSOLUTELY NOT took a big old girl Friday night, got little more knowledge for next year and with any luck all comes together. Was the season a successful? No not in terms of shooting a bear, BUT I did enjoy myself have the opportunity to kill one and got to see some BEAUTIFUL country you would not believe excited in New Jersey.

It was a great time of year to be out. I too was thankful that we finally have an archery bow season for Baer even though I too was not successful. It certainly is a step in the right direction and I only wish or hope that next year we can use tree stands over bait.

New Jersey must've been the only state to hunt bears in December. Previous NJ hunts for me were in a 2 foot snowstorm blizzard and another season when it was 8°. Surprisingly enough I tracked the bear in the snow to a neighbors property and could not go any further even then.
Good luck the rest of archery season for deer and maybe it will happen for bear during the 6 day gun season in December?
