☠ k-villa 2016-17 hunting journal

Postby k-villa » Wed Aug 17, 2016 10:44 pm

no where near ready, summer over? no cameras, no bait, going all pro, instinct at this point, hunting old' school and know it worked then so counting on it now. spent a fortune on corn and other bait last year, corn proved well in January. Bought the most ever and least sightings ever. Though 2015-16 year but finished well. This year is def a mix, still steaks and meat from last year in the freeze and no time now... or yet :P

prob climb a tree opening day Sept 10, know of a few good spots....

First in long time didn't make opening day of bow for wasn't even ready with any gear. Hunted Sunday evening at 7:05 on ground slow walking in t-shirt (hot humid weather), 7:10 drew back and then later around 7:30. Thinking Wed afternoon or hoping so. Lots of good sign this year, deer are coming into corn for those that have been baiting and I know of quiet a few who have taken their earn-a-buck doe.

Wed and tonight I've made it out for a little over 3 hrs each sit.

Sept 15
1st night out and at Hollands in jrs stand. Hot 85+ degrees. Had 3 does coming in at 40 yards until a flashlight appeared from behind on the neighbors property 25 mins before dark. Gone.

Sept 16
Tonight about 75 degrees, behind gun club one doe directly below stand and walked away into heavy brush never offering a shot. Nothing else seen other than two raccoons.

Small doe taken Friday the 24th at the pond. Buck tag now good, just need to find the time to get out. No time over the weekend and looks like a filled upcoming week.

Another weekend gone with no hunting. The time to harvest the crops is while the sun is shining. Thankful for the 3 does harvested so far and the freezer is looking good thanks to the 3 big does taken in February of last season. Pheasant opens next weekend and maybe a few hours can be found for the dogs are ready.

Saturday, Oct 12th opening day of pheasant. Female kicked up three cock birds, one in heavy trees and out of sight, other two just out of range. Got out at 3:30pm and hunted til dark.

Sunday quick deer bowhunt the first in over 3 weeks. Got out again at 3:30 (more important kid soccer game commitment prior). Almost had a local arrested for hunter harassment and gave a fair warning. At 4:30 had a 3.5 yr old buck come in, right side of antlers were heavy wide 3 points, left side a Y small fork - def. a cull buck. Then 6 does come running and grunting following. Big buck never came out of creek bed and thicket, never saw him. Sounded big and banged up a tree for a little while. Good night out and at least saw a little of the rut.

Sadly, no big itch to NJ deer hunt. Another 18"-20" spread, 120" total NJ buck, well... a challenge to get, but have several times. NJ bear bumbed me as did no out of state hunt. Friends just came back from Montana hunt and wish I went - they all took mule deer bucks and had a great time. Freezer is full from Febuary's deer and so no big need meatwise. Good start this fall season with 3 does taken and so I'm thinking some late evening hunts with no crowds on Saturday's with the dogs. Too swamped with work and 30 other things on plate so walking fields for pheasant sounds best for mind clearing.

Thanksgiving 2016 and Saturday, out twice with Mikey Furyese and not a pheasant kicked up. Dogs worked hard. Little shell casings, no signs of prediator kills, and F&W states distributing birds "more evenly" this year whatever that means? Looking like a $40 pheasant "stamp" not worth it. Shot a squirrel and was first kill in long time. Dogs worked hard, and we all got out and got exercise so not a total loss, but always helps to see game.

Practiced with an old hoyt recurve and flu flu's today, hoping to see birds first.
