Placing a built up, miss-treated, or rusty skillet or dutch oven in a long, hot burning camp fire I hear too is a good way to start the reseasoning process. I use nothing but my cast irons and love them. I lost my FB post from a while back on a great website that tells all about cast iron.

My venison lard seems ok to use, if used often for I think it can go rancid.

I can't wait for yardsale season again to find more. Thanks for the post.

Reseasoning in a hot burning camp fire will clean a cast iron piece for sure. I did it accidentally and it took off EVERYTHING! Not sure about whether this is good for the piece or not. But it will clean it.

I think I remember that. I wonder if you can get a fire to hot and melt the cast iron? Was it a huge fire with lots of hot coals or not really? About a 30 minute burn time? I have a few skillets I'm going to try and reseason starting with a hot fire clean this spring/summer.
